JOB DESCRIPTION: * For use by Emory Temporary Services only * Supervises blood collection and processing and assists in training new phlebotomists. Prioritizes phlebotomy requests and assigns collections to phlebotomists. Collects, labels and processes patient specimens for testing. Collects patient blood samples by performing venipuncture, finger and heel punctures. Promptly researches any problems with specimen collection or processing. Oversees and performs special collections and capillary punctures, monitors coagulation and bleeding times, and reports findings to the medical technologist in charge. Receives donor blood, reagents and supplies and documents date received. Assists in preparing blood components for transfusion following established protocol. Observes universal precautions, barrier protection methods, infection control and isolation procedures. Responds to telephone inquires from medical staff concerning status of patient testing. Adheres to strict protocol regarding patient identification. Participates in in-service and educational programs. Responds to stat collection assignments within fifteen minutes and in accordance with protocol. Provides technical guidance, instruction, and supervision to less experienced phlebotomists. Assists supervisor in maintaining attendance records, reporting incidents, and maintaining stocks of commonly used phlebotomy supplies. Inspects specimen labeling and packaging and identifies those that have been improperly labeled or collected. Troubleshoots the laboratory computer system. Performs related responsibilities as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A high school diploma or equivalent (GED). Successful completion of a phlebotomy training program and two years of hospital phlebotomy experience.
