JOB DESCRIPTION: Provides technical assistance to pathologists in surgical pathology and autopsy procedures. Participates in instructing and educating staff and residents in pathologic techniques; maintains appropriate educational literature and materials. Prepares, processes, examines and assists in the analysis of tissues. Operates photomicrography equipment. Maintains a filing system for medical photographs including a system for cross-reference. Stocks and restocks procedural rooms with the equipment, adequate chemicals and supplies necessary for the efficient daily operation. Monitors Resident and directs the workflow for maximum efficiency of department personnel. Works with manager to formulate plan for professional development. Attends educational in-services as appropriate. Participates in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments. Initiates action to obtain legal authorization for necropsy. Obtains patient charts and other pertinent data for review by the pathologist. Conducts in-services for technicians and other paramedical personnel regarding services and techniques in the field of pathology. Provides medical residents with instruction in the use of photomicrography equipment and procedures for routine dissections and autopsies. Prepares and maintains teaching materials and instructional literature for in-services and other training programs relating to anatomic pathology. Prepares biological specimens for examination and analysis by following the protocol for the specialized technique. Provides technical assistance to pathologists during autopsy and/or post mortem procedures by anticipating the need for instruments or equipment and performing specialized procedures as directed. Using specialized techniques, tests and analyzes biological specimens. Restores each body according to acceptable standards prior to its release to funeral directors. Provides data which indicates the presence of bio-hazards so that appropriate handling precautions may be taken. Observes the principles of sterile technique in carrying out daily responsibilities. Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelors Degree in Science or certified prior to 2003. Must be PA(ASCP) or eligible and pass exam within 18 months of hire.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium Max 25lbs): up to 25 lbs, 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs, 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 25 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.

Environmental exposures include, but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure Bio-hazardous waste Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors Communicable diseases Electrical shock, Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation, Shift work, Travel may be required. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
