Job Summary

Working with the Dean of the School of Medicine and the faculty, the Chair will be responsible for establishing a research vision aimed at expanding and further developing state-of-the-art research programs andassuring the quality of the training for the department. These responsibilities require the Chair to be an influential leader, to provide effective mentoring programs, and to contribute to the education and research missions of the department.Offices and laboratories with state-of-the-art facilities are located in Atlanta, Georgia on Emory’s main campus. Tremendous opportunities for growth and development exist as the department aims to remain a national leader.

Qualifications

Successful candidate will be accomplished leader in the field of biochemistry research and be able to present a vision for building and sustaining a top-ranked, research-intensive department of biochemistry. Experience in designing curricula and training the next generation of scientists and medical students is required. As a department chair, candidates will be expected to be creative problem solvers, and have proven academic, financial, and administrative experience. Importantly, the chair will be expected to collaborate with other leaders and departments throughout the institution to advance our overall research, teaching, and service missions to our local and national communities.

Currently, we seek a leader in the field of biochemistry research to chair and lead the Department of Biochemistry.The department maintains a dynamic research-intensive environment that provides excellent opportunities for pre- and post- doctoral training and effective educational programs for medical students. Researchers are highly interactive and productive in a multidisciplinary environment and maintain strong interactions with both basic science and clinical departments within the school and university. The department’s research interests focus on fundamental basic biological and biochemical problems related to human health and disease with strengths in structural biology and cryo-electron microscopy (single particle analysis), cell signaling, protein structure, membrane biology, DNA repair and genetic instability, epigenetics, and glycobiology. Key core research laboratories, including those for proteomics, lipidomics, and glycomics, are located with the Biochemistry Department. The department has strong close relationships with the Winship Cancer Institute and other departments within the school, including Microbiology & Immunology, Neurology, and Medicine. As a founding member of the interdepartmental Biochemistry, Cell and Developmental Biology graduate program within Emory’s Graduate Division of Biological and Biomedical Sciences, department faculty serve as active members in this program, as well as other discipline specific programs.
