JOB DESCRIPTION: Manages the operations, personnel and fiscal activities for an academic department or business unit. Identifies and leads efforts to address specific operational issues. Develops recommendations and action plans towards their resolution. Determines and recommends options for addressing budget issues. Assists in preparing contract budgets, grant applications, proposals, status reports and/or financial statements. Plans and prepares projections for management of unit operations and associated costs. Researches and investigates employee issues/concerns. Collaborates with Human Resources to recommend an appropriate course of action. Responds to inquiries and/or complaints from faculty, staff, students, parents, outside agencies and/or the public which require interpretation of policies and procedures. Projects and develops plans for addressing staffing requirements. Hires, supervises and evaluates regular staff and student employees. Prioritizes work assignments and special projects. May conduct research and develop proposals for new programs and services. Performs related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in business administration or a field related to the department's area of specialty and two years of office administration experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education and training. Supervisory experience required. Experience with various personal computer software applications.

Looking for a team player to join staff of dynamic and active department and oversee departmental operations. The Department of Environmental Health is a rapidly growing department within the Rollins School of Public Health (RSPH). It consists of 21 primary faculty members with an additional 50 joint and adjunct faculty; faculty extramural research funding has increased to $19M annually. The Department has achieved national recognition for research and training in the areas of environmental epidemiology, toxicology, infectious disease ecology, exposure science, risk analysis, and implementation science; the faculty has particular strength in air pollutant and waterborne exposures, pesticides and other chemicals, and climate change. The Department’s master’s programs (MPH, MSPH) have about 100 students enrolled and its doctoral program has about 25 students. The Rollins School of Public Health is one of the nation’s leading schools of public health.

The successful candidate will oversee and coordinate operational aspects of the Department. This will include oversight of operational budget and accounts; coordination with RSPH and Emory research administration units to ensure business aspects of the Department’s grants and contracts are being managed seamlessly; support of faculty in planning and adhering to technical requirements; monitoring of work flow within Department; management of department space and facilities; Department event/meeting planning; handling of external inquiries; support of departmental communications (website and other); support of academic programs; development of external partnerships. Position will include supervisory responsibilities.

Required: strong skills in management of academic unit with active extramural research and teaching programs, administrative/financial skills, oral and written communication, event planning, interpersonal skills for networking and coordination, technological aptitude. Must be a team player who coordinates with others and is willing to provide back-up as needed. Helpful skills: Strongly prefer experience at Emory and knowledge of Emory software systems (e.g., COMPASS for financials). Knowledge of RSPH systems (e.g., Cascade for website, SLATE for admissions) and some knowledge of environmental health or related fields helpful.
